There are 3 types of General Contractor licenses available in Georgia.
The Georgia Basic Residential Contractor (Click Here).
This license is for a contractor who performs contract work or activity relative to detached one-family and two-family residences and one-family townhouses less than four stories in height and their accessory buildings and structures with a contract amount over $2,500.
The trades exam for the Georgia Basic Residential Contractor License has 80 questions with a 200 minute time limit. You must answer 56 questions correctly (70%) to pass the exam. The exam fee is $72.

The Georgia Residential Light Commercial Contractor (Click Here).
This license is for a contractor to build residential, multi-family and multi-use light commercials buildings and structures which are less than four stories in height and less than 25,000 square feet in aggregate interior floor space, or pre-engineered steel buildings not exceeding 50,000 square feet of interior floor space.
The trades exam for the Georgia Residential Light Commercial Contractor License has 90 questions with a 230 minute time limit. You must answer 63 questions correctly (70%) to pass the exam. The exam fee is $72.

A General Contractor with the unlimited designation is permitted to do any type of construction work and to bid on any type of contracts including residential, commercial, and industrial.
The trades exam for the Georgia Commercial General Contractor License has 115 questions with a 330 minute time limit. You must answer 81 questions correctly (70%) to pass the exam. The exam fee is $106.
The trades exam covers 12 topics from 21 different books.
There is a business law exam that you’ll need to pass also. This covers information about Georgia’s business laws such as tax rates, the make up of the General Contractor License Board, fines etc.
This exam has 50 questions and a 120 minute time limit. The fee for this exam is $60.
The bottom line is this. In Georgia, if you are building, or doing work that falls under the definition of General Contractor, you need to be licensed.
