Changes to South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation Residential Contractor License and Exams

There are two licenses one can obtain for residential contractor work in SC, the RBB or the RBW.

RBB is the new Residential Builders exam which now has 110 questions and you are allotted 360 minutes to complete. This exam includes questions about plumbing, HVAC and electrical, and those who hold this license may also perform that type of work in addition to general building of residential properties.

RBW is the Residential Builder Waiver which is used as an exam waiver for the trades portion of your exam if you took another qualifying state exam. Everyone is still required to take the SC Residential Business Law exam.

You may also take advantage of the RBW if you have already taken the NASCLA exam and do not plan to do plumbing, HVAC or electrical work.

Those holding the RBW license may NOT perform plumbing, HVAC or electrical work without a separate license for each of those.
